As we approach the end of another busy term and begin preparing student reports, it's timely to pause and reflect on what truly matters in education. A recent article by educator Adam Voigt struck a chord with me, offering a powerful reminder particularly as we are deep into assessment season: our children are so much more than grades, ranks or dots on a page.
Voigt highlights a truth many of us instinctively know but sometimes forget in the flurry of assessments and reporting: while our current education systems excel at teaching competition, they often fall short in teaching collaboration. We rank, we score, we measure – often creating silent academic races that spotlight a few and overlook the rest.
But the world our children are stepping into is not one where success belongs to the ‘top of the class.’ Instead, it’s a world that rewards teamwork, problem-solving, empathy and communication. The real winners are not the ones who go it alone, but those who can connect, collaborate and bring others along on the journey.
Voigt puts it plainly: "The world recognises not those who ‘do it yourself’ but those who ‘do it with others.’” Whether it’s building a career, navigating challenges, or chasing dreams – it’s collaboration, not solo performance, that opens doors.
This insight is a valuable reminder during report season. While academic progress is important, it’s only part of the story. At our school, we are committed to seeing the whole child – their character, their creativity, their ability to work with others and their growing understanding of the world.
That’s why we continue to foster learning environments where collaboration is not just encouraged but intentionally built into the way we teach.
So as you read your child’s report later this term, we invite you to see beyond the grades. Celebrate their effort, their kindness, their resilience, and the way they show up for others. These are the qualities that truly future-proof our children – and they deserve just as much recognition as any academic achievement.
Because every child is more than a number – they are a unique, growing person with so much to offer the world.
Wishing you a lovely long weekend!
